Fritz Schaller: St. Paulus Church, 1966–1968

  • The Church of St. Paul appears like an oversized piece of Japanese paper-folding art. In contrast to post-war concrete churches, the building seems light, almost floating. The concrete of the folding unit is only 7 cm thick. On the outside, it is cladded with copper plates. The extraordinary and unique shape of the church could only be realized through a congenial interaction of the architect Fritz Schaller (1904–2002) with the structural engineer Prof. Stefan Polonyi (*1930). New calculation methods in engineering and the use of the computer made it possible to turn this idea into reality. The construction works started on June 5, 1966. It took two years until it was finished.

  • In use. Heritage listed since 1997 (last updated on July 25, 2019).
