Rainer Zinsmeister / Giselher Scheffler: St. Josef Church, 1970D–1975

  • Stuttgart-Heslach, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • The church building for Heslach should allow different forms of worship and be a place for inner prayer. According to the times, the architects complied with this request and created an ensemble without a high campanile which heralds an outstanding position. Instead, secular and sacred parts are merging closely together and can hardly touch one another more closely: the tower stump with bells provides access to the underground car park. Inside, however, the visitor is greeted by an unexpectedly meditative atmosphere. It is created by the soft, indirect exposure and the sophisticated color concept. The complex includes a community center and a retirement home.

  • Heritage protected since 2015. In use and good condition (last updated on May 24, 2024).
