Konstantinos Papaioannou / Konstantinos Fines: Residential Building, 1967?–1970

  • Zorgrafou, Athens, Greece, Show on map
  • #RES #Western Europe
  • One of the most imposing examples of brutalist architecture in Greece, this 10-storey edifice stands at the foot of Hymettus mountain, and comprises of two distinct volumes, one developing in height, and a lower one covering the entrance, the restaurant & a multipurpose hall with a capacity of 600. It started its operation in 1974 as the students' residence for the National Technical University. It boasts multiple elements of the Corbusean synthetical language, such as the tall pilotis, the aesthetic of "beton brut", the compartmentalization of form and function, the emphasis on public space, etc. A construction full of power, sentiment and grandeur, carrying on its massive concrete shoulders almost single-handedly the weight of the country's brutalist architecture, is in grave danger...

  • In use, yet decaying due to decades' worth of neglect. It seems like the building will be reaching the limit of its habitability in the imminent future, unless undergone extensive repairs.
