Hans-Joachim Lenz: Protestant Resurrection Church, 1961C–1962

  • Mainz, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • The church, with its community center, rectory and kindergarten, is enclosed on three sides by the SWR broadcasting center. It is located on an east slope and thus stands out from the surrounding area. The cubature of the building is that of an ashlar out of light exposed concrete, nowhere concealed, unmistakably characterized by the architectural style of the 1960s. The other buildings on the site are all flat-roofed concrete cubes. The exterior decoration is formed by a surrounding concrete frieze on the overhanging flat roof, designed by Heinz Hemrich in 1961, which tells biblical stories in forty pictures. The architect placed the campanile free-standingly next to the church.

  • In use. Heritage protected since 2008 (last updated on March 25, 2024).
