Since the way to the Gmünder Münster was very far from many parts of the city, a new church was planned in the 1950s on the grounds of the Schirenhof fort. In 1960, an architectural competition was held, which the architects "Vogt und Sauter" won. Nevertheless, Peter Schenk's design was implemented, as his plan provided for cellar rooms that were more suitable for future use. After some delays due to political disputes, construction of the church began in 1966. On November 24, 1968, the church was finally consecrated.
