Throughout the 1950s the population of Sheffield Corporation’s Gleadless Valley estate was growing. A new church was designed by the Architects Braddock and Martin-Smith.
Despite its sculptural form and overwhelming size, due to its brick façades, the building is barely noticeable between the residential buildings. A white painted cross is the only thing that peeks through between the houses on the Rollestone hillside, marking the top of the in elevation triangular building. The full height stained glass windows, designed by the artist John Baker, are another distinctive feature of the church.
