  • According to an old tradition, the city of Reutlingen planned to build their new city hall on the town’s marketplace. This is why they spent many years upfront the construction with buying the necessary properties in this area. Here, in the middle of the old town, a building group consisting of a council hall and two administrative wings was erected to form the new city hall. All three building parts are connected by bridge-like transitions. Creating an L-shape, the two administrative buildings enclose a forecourt with plants and water features. This forecourt continues under the council hall, which is suspended on supports, and leads to the marketplace of the old town which creates a transition from old and new structures. The exterior appearance of the complex is characterized by gray exposed concrete in various textures and the contrasting dark, wooden windows and doors. All three building parts have columns placed in front of the façade, connected above the roof by horizontal beams. This second level of the façade breaks up the mass of the building. With the help of this design element, the council hall is highlighted in particular.
