Philip Johnson: List Art Building, Brown University, 1969C–1971

  • With its portico, the List Art Building is a reminiscence of classical buildings, but the simple columns are also recalling the rectangularities of modernism. These features are often found in postmodern buildings. At first, Johnson planned a façade clad in marble, but for financial reasons it became this special exposed concrete façade, where a geometric pattern and circular holes (that indicate the location of the bolts for the concrete formwork) create an ornament resembling the textile block houses of Frank Lloyd Wright. The building was sponsored by a donation by Mr. and Mrs. Albert List.

  • In use.
