Due to the population growth in Reutlingen’s reconstruction phase since the Second World War, the desire for a public swimming pool increased. The idea was, that it should allow both recreational use and swimming competitions. On an area of 10 hectares, a facility was built which was praised after its completion as the most modern open-air swimming pool in the Federal Republic of Germany at the time.Â
The whole complex includes an entrance building with three wings enclosing an inner courtyard; a two-story locker room wing, built as an exposed concrete structure open to the pools with an adjacent sanitary wing, in which glass blocks on the street façade and a light band in the roof provide sufficient lighting; as well as stands; sports and leisure pools; and a diving pool with jump tower. The latter forms one of the architectural highlights of the facility: It is an imposing concrete sculpture with a height of 10 meters and several branched diving platforms. Another masterpiece is the grandstand, whose concrete steps can seat 2.000 spectators. Its impressively elegant construction with open passageways is particularly readable at the rear. A landscaping concept connects everything with green recreation areas.
