Due to the illustrious neighborhood of an 18th-century episcopal summer residence with court garden, the architects endeavored to build a modest, restrained complex when constructing the Teacher Training College in Eichstätt. The result is a group of cuboid structures in reinforced concrete skeleton construction with infill of quarry stone masonry in Jurassic limestone. Since the site is located in the floodplain of the Altmühl River, the foundations had to be built on piles. The different building parts are arranged around a central courtyard area and partially connected by glazed corridors. Exposed concrete masonry elements and a fountain basin on the yard pick up on the materiality of the buildings.Â
The room program takes into account new curricular concepts that, in contrast to the more common lecture mode in the past, are now oriented toward the higher frequence of seminars.Â
The university offers space for 350 students.
