Kaup, Scholz, Wortmann: District Court Nymphenburgerstraße, 1977

  • Munich, Germany, Show on map
  • #GOV #Western Europe
  • Like many Brutalist buildings in Munich, the large nine-storey court house merges into the perimeter block structure. Through an offset, the building volume forms a lowered forecourt at the street intersection, where the entrance is located. The courtrooms create a kind of Beletage on the first floor. Protruding pillars highlight this floor from the uniform grid facade of the floors above, which jump back a few metres.

  • In the course of 2025, the District Court will move from Nymphenburgerstraße to a newly constructed building at Leonrodplatz. The future of the existing building from 1977 has not yet been clarified. Demolition of the building is likely. The initiative JustizzentrumErhalten is campaigning for the preservation of the building and is looking for ideas for a new use for the 1970s building. Urban planners, architects and professors from the Technical University of Munich have also called for the court building to be preserved and put to further use (last updated on February 11, 2025).
