Klaus Franz: Catholic Community Center St. Martin, 1972D–1975

  • In the garden of the former Dominican monastery of Bad Wimpfen, the Catholic Community Center St. Martin was built in the 1970s. The architect Klaus Franz placed a cubic, brutalist structure next to the historical buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries, which caused a lot of criticism and outrage among the population.

The community center building has a square ground plan, from which a free-standing stair tower, arranged at a 45-degree angle, stands apart. The two-story building with a flat roof and a chimney tower is pierced in the middle by an atrium. On the first floor there is a parish hall with a large glass front. The upper floor, which contains a parson's apartment and official rooms, is largely closed off from the outside with exposed concrete walls. Here, the façade is broken up by only a few windows. Colorful accents complement the rough concrete grey. Thanks to the building's hillside location, the opening of the basement to the monastery garden with further glazings became possible. Youth rooms and a library are located here.

  • Heritage protected. In the 1990s, the actual exposed concrete building was completely painted over in white.
