Graaf + Schweger: Fachhochschule Bergedorf, 1972

  • Like a gigantic armada of spaceships, the elongated bars of Fachhochschule Bergedorf (Bergedorf University of Applied Sciences) lie in the midst of a peaceful idyll of a single-family homes. The interior is a brutalist masterpiece in its original state: an enormous entrance hall completely in béton brut; coffered ceilings and staircase sculptures form a grey, shell-grey overall work of art; red, blue and yellow stripes add colour accents; metal handrails are embedded in the concrete; corridors, lecture halls, seminar rooms and the canteen are also largely in their original condition. The Fachhochschule Bergedorf is a utopia turned into concrete–not only architecturally, but also socially: the openness and expanse of the rooms speak of the ideal of free thinking

  • In use. It is still unknown what will happen to the building after the planned departure of the university of applied sciences around 2030.
