Ieoh Ming Pei: OCBC Centre, 1970D–1976

  • Singapore, Singapore, Show on map
  • #COM #Southeast Asia
  • The OCBC Centre building was at its completion with 197 meters the tallest building in Asia outside Japan. The tower's unique structural system with two massive concrete cores and steel transfer girders allowed a rapid construction method in three sections. The massive concrete core was originally designed as exposed concrete façade. But concerns that a local fungus would cause discoloration in the porous concrete due to the tropical climate in Singapore led to the façade being covered in granit tiles. It was a striking addition to Singapore's skyline, showcasing both the city-state's architectural innovation and emerging development.

  • Still in use as the headquarters of the OCBC Bank.
