Fritz Novotny / Arthur Mähner: Residential and Commercial Building “N+M Haus”, 1969C–1970

  • Offenbach, Germany, Show on map
  • #RES #Western Europe
  • The “N+M Haus” in Offenbach is one such building that is often compared to a ship. The name “N+M” stands for the architects Novotny and Mähne, who have also housed their own office in the elongated building alongside a bank, a restaurant with a bowling alley, various stores and 32 residential apartments. Visually, the façade is clearly structured: The office and commercial floors with rounded corners are surrounded by concrete balustrades and window bands. The angular three-storey apartment block, which is characterized by loggias, niches, and balconies as well as cantilevered components and asymmetrical window openings, is set back above them. Finally, a staircase and elevator tower protrudes from the roof like the chimney of a steamship.

  • Heritage protected since 2015. In 2016 and 2017, the building was renovated with the aim of preserving its original condition as much as possible. The owners responsible were awarded the City of Offenbach's Monument Protection Prize in 2019. The light green surfaces of the residential block, which had only been painted subsequently, were replaced during the renovation with a uniform tone (last updated on March 13, 2024).
