In 1957, the architects Walter Maria Förderer, Rolf Georg Otto and Hans Zwimpfer won an anonymous competition against 116 competitors with their design for the Handels-Hochschule in St. Gallen on Rosenberg. The foundation stone was laid in 1960 and the building was inaugurated in 1963. It was conceived as a total work of art (“Gesamtkunstwerk”) and combines exposed concrete brutalism with exhibited objects and paintings of contemporary art, for example by Alberto Giacometti or Gerhard Richter.
