Until its demolition in 2000, the town hall served the district town of Esslingen as a worthy venue for cultural, social and political events on the edge of the old town. While the exterior façades in the east were divided by wide bands of exposed concrete with low ribbon windows to effectively shiled the noise of the neighbouring main road, the west side was designed to be more open to let in daylight. Through the main portal, visitors entered a two-storey foyer, sections of whose walls were decorated with gold paintings by Swiss artist Heinrich Eichmann (1915-1970). The centrepiece of the complex was a 700 m² ballroom on the first floor, flanked by ancillary and functional rooms such as a restaurant. The ground floor also provided space for a bowling alley, the kitchen and a tenant's flat.
Large parts of the interior and exterior walls were characterised by exposed concrete, ceilings and balustrades were made of mahogany wood, and slate tiles covered the floor in the foyer and restaurant.
After the demolition of the Stadthalle, the Neckar Forum was built on the same site as a cultural and congress centre (inauguration: 2005).
