“In the battle for superiority, state-led scientific research was important to both East and West Berlin. In the East, among the most unusual constructions to come out of this were the Isothermal Spherical Laboratories. [...] The main shape resembles an H₂ molecule (some would claim it resembles something else, which gave it the nickname ‘academy breasts’), decoupled from the ground by short, V-shaped concrete pillars. [...] Just like the Mäusebunker, the Isothermal Spherical Laboratories show that highly technical requirements can sometimes lead to unique solutions that are at once functional and beautifully sculptural.” — Excerpt from Felix Torkar’s book BRUTALIST BERLIN (Blue Crow Media) 2025.
